The current rage in home improvements inĀ Baldwin City is new windows. With so many different selections to choose from, though, people are hard-pressed to figure out which ones best suit their needs. Triple pane windows are the latest creation being pushed by many window companies, and they do come with their fair share of benefits.

Window Contractors

There is no limit to what people can find when they start shopping for new replacement windows for homes in Baldwin City , but the main goal is energy savings. Of course, the tax incentives and utility benefits are nice, as well.Triple pane windows allow you to save even more than double pane windows because they have an extra pane of glass to protect the elements from getting in, as well as to keep your heat or cool air inside your home. While many companies will tell you that triple paned glass is not much more advantageous than double paned glass, it is every little bit that helps in saving money. When you have larger windows or windows that face the south or the west, you will see the most energy savings with these windows.

Triple Pane Windows - Insulate Your Home With High Quality Windows

Now is a great time to replace your home's windows. The federal government and local utility companies are making it even more tempting to finally make those changes you've been thinking about. Rebates and tax credits allow you to save up to $2000.

How much energy will you save?

It will vary, but a typical home can save $400-500 per year by replacing single pane or double pane aluminum windows.

Are triple pane windows better than double pane?

Several companies offer triple pane windows, and more will be doing so as they jump on the bandwagon. Essentially, you are gaining in efficiency over a double pane window. How much, and is it worth it?

Let's compare two same size windows by a major manufacturer:

Double pane: U factor.30, SHGC Factor.21, VLT factor.49

Triple pane: U factor.30, SHGC Factor.19, VLT factor.34

The major difference is in VLT or Visible Light Transmittance. The lower number is better for efficiency, but a lower number also means less light in the room. In this example, roughly 30% less. The difference in price for the windows is about 10%.

It's our experience that in most cases the cost difference with triple pane windows is not advantageous. It began as a sales tool, and now everyone is starting to do it in order to compete. If you have a home with a lot of square footage of glass, it might be a good idea to use the triple pane windows on big windowed areas, especially in south or west facing areas. In a normal bedroom with one or two windows, we doubt if you would notice a difference in energy savings and heat loss in the room between double pane and triple pane.

PSE Rebate: $6 per square foot of window up to $500.

Federal Tax Credit: 30% of the cost of the windows up to $1500.

Installation is not included in the rebate/credit calculations.

Example: You purchase $5000 of windows and they are installed. The square footage of the windows is 85 square feet.

PSE Rebate: $500 $6 x 85 = $510

Federal Tax Credit: $1500 30% of $5000 = $1500

Total Savings: $2000

Conclusion

  • Work with a good contractor who will provide the options you require. There are many windows that are good quality and will qualify.
  • Don't succumb to high pressure sales tactics and special, one time offers.
  • Look for an installation that is turnkey and when complete looks like the windows were always there.
  • Apply for your rebates and credits and enjoy your savings!

Indoor CondensationThe installation of your new replacement windows has made your home more air-tight and energy efficient. Over the years, you will save considerable energy dollars and enjoy a more comfortable living environment as a result of your investment. Now that your house is more air-tight, moisture created by everyday activities (cooking, bathing, laundry, etc.) is no longer escaping through the drafty holes and cracks of your old windows. This moisture, now trapped in your home, looks for a place to rest/collect. Most often this moisture or "condensation" collects on your windows. It is important to understand that windows do not cause condensation, they simply reflect a condition in the home. Condensation is an indication of too much moisture in the air which manifests itself on the glass surface in three ways; (1) fogging, (2) droplets, (3) ice.5. Do not hang full loads of wet laundry inside your home to dry during the heating season.6. Vent clothes dryer to the outdoors.7. Open fireplace damper.8. Open a window and air out your house for a few minutes each day.9. If troublesome condensation persists, see your heating contractor about an outside air intake for your furnace.NOTE: Condensation on glass is a natural result of excess moisture in the house and does not indicate a defective product or faulty installation. Maintaining proper household humidity levels may prevent problems such as mold, mildew and related health issues. If you become aware of persistent condensation on your windows, you should take immediate remedial action to prevent water, mold and/or mildew damage to your property and to avoid potential health risks.
